Possibly one of the earliest wooden needlefish, the Gibbs Needlefish is
certainly one of the most popular. Weighing in at 1 3/4oz and around 7" long,
they cast extremely well for a plug that floats! We have a couple unique
colors of these needlefish available for you here, the parrot needlefish and the
dark green/silver needlefish.
The Needlefish is best fished with a
slow, steady retrieve - I like to add an occasional "twitch" to my retrieve, but
this is far from necessary - I think it just gives me something to think about
;-) If you aren't getting hits with the slow, steady retrieve, try giving it an
occasional twitch followed by a very short pause - this will sometimes be met
with a crashing strike as you start retrieving again. There was a monster
striper caught and released at Montauk, NY a couple weeks ago (late October)
that ate a yellow Gibbs needlefish - it weighed nearly 60 pounds! So, yes, these
things really do work :-) As always, keep your hooks sharp! Carefully revive and
release any fish that you aren't planning to eat, they are a precious resource
that is under tremendous pressure right now.
